Vajra Light Opens Its New Home

With a small space but a big intention, Vajra Light Buddhist Center officially opened with a beautiful blessing ceremony on Sunday, January 14. Kadam Morten guided us in removing obstacles and inviting the Buddhas to this lovely room. Meanwhile the children waited with wide eyes for the delicious offerings. As we recited the prayers, in the distance we could hear the city noise and traffic six floors below. It felt like all of White Plains was receiving blessings.

At the Summer Festival, Venerable Geshe Kelsang had given the center its beautiful name, Vajra Light. In late autumn, Kadam Morten suggested that we try to find a place of our own so that we could increase the range of our activities. Due to the efforts of dedicated practitioners, things fell into place. In particular, Barbara Panni was in the right place at the right time and heard about a small room becoming available in the Arts Council Building. Very quickly this small, plain office was transformed into a meditation room. Geshe Kelsang kindly gave us a very beautiful Vajrasattva Statue. Kadam Morten gave us his lovely Buddha Shakyamuni statue. Debbie Serra made beautiful shelf covers for our shrine; Marge Tramonti seemed to have all the extras we needed, like a phone and a vacuum. People dedicated their time and money to buy the chairs, lamps, shelves and fabric.

The response to the new center has been wonderful. All the classes are full, and because we are offering the classes as a series, it is a special opportunity for Kadam Morten to speak to the same group for four weeks. In such a small space people introduce themselves and are getting to know one another. It is only a matter of time before we have a larger center and more elbow room. Until then we can focus on the big opportunity this small room provides us. Here we have the ability to hear incredible teachings that will help us to diminish negative states of mind, cultivate positive states of mind and eventually lead us to complete enlightenment. We have the guidance of a completely qualified and loving teacher, a growing spiritual community to support us in our Dharma practice and many blessings from the Buddhas. We are so fortunate to have all of these conditions come together. This room is like a small seed being planted. With the right nurturing and support it will grow, flourish and benefit many people.
